Chapter 11

Back in Los Angeles, Charon and Matilda left the hospital, where Johnny was resting, to perform the final location spell in search of Jessie. Matilda drove them to South Los Angeles. She parked at a Subway Restaurant on S. Vermont Ave.

They went inside and ordered sandwiches—even though Charon wasn’t hungry, he ordered one, too—before sitting in a corner booth. As Matilda cut her sandwich into bite-size pieces, she caught him up on her progress.

He studied her as she explained all she’d done. He found he was distracted by the idea that he had to drink as much of her in as he could, since he didn’t know how much longer he’d be in her company.

“So, you see, I printed out a map from Google of the ten blocks I got from the last location spell,” she said, pulling a folded piece of paper from her bag and flattening it on the table. “I just need to perform a dowsing spell to find the exact location.”

From her bag, she pulled out a teardrop pendant dangling from the end of a silver chain. The pendant was engraved with a sigil shaped like one-half of a clam shell. Matilda held the pendant over the map and let it dangle from its chain. As she rotated it clockwise, she said, “Please show me the location of Johnny Trevino’s sister, Jessica.”

Charon and Matilda leaned over the map, their heads close, as they watched the pendant swing for several rounds before it began to slow down and come to a stop. The tip of the teardrop pendant pointed to a large building on the map.

Matilda read, “John Muir High School.” She looked up excitedly. “It’s across the street, less than a block away!”

“But there must be hundreds of students at that school,” Charon said. “And we don’t know her last name. How will we find her?”

“We could wait for school to end and try another spell, one where the smoke leads you to the lost person.”

“You can do that?” he asked.

“Ye of little faith,” she teased.

He resisted the urge to lean across the table and kiss her. “Why don’t we invite Johnny to join us?”

“Good idea. It might be his only chance to see her, if the foster family won’t cooperate. They sometimes don’t, you know.”

They finished their sandwiches and then drove to the hospital to see Johnny. When Charon attempted to follow Matilda into Johnny’s room, he found himself unable to enter. He looked above the door frame to see a piece of paper with a drawing of a symbol on it—the same sigil that had prevented him from entering Matilda’s hotel apartment.

“What’s this?” Charon pointed to the symbol.

“A protective ward,” Matilda said, returning to the hallway to look up at her handy work. “It prevents anything nonhuman from entering.”

“It won’t keep out Thanatos, you realize,” Charon said softly, so no one would overhear. “Nothing can stop Death.”

She narrowed her eyes at him. “What makes you so sure?”

“I’m going downstairs for some coffee. Want some?”

“No thanks,” she said.
